ADVITOS the success story

Dear Friends,

please let us share with you the success story of the München based company named ADVITOS.

ADVITOS developed the ADVOS multi device (ADVanced Organ Support) to provide an integrated 4-in-1 multi-organ support therapy that enables simultaneous support of all three main detoxification organs – liver, lungs, and kidney – and corrects blood acid-base imbalances. Pilot trials in critically ill patients have shown that this therapy increased survival in severe organ failure from 20% up to 50%.

Multi-organ failure causes the deaths of approximately half a million intensive care patients in Western Europe and the USA every year. This is about 60% of all deaths in intensive care units. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this number has increased to around 750,000 patients in the past year. On the other hand, conventional extracorporeal procedures such as mechanical ventilation, ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), dialysis, and liver-assist therapy only support the function of one or two organs. By treating all three organs simultaneously, and not consecutively like with existing solutions, ADVOS offers a holistic approach giving the patients a much better chance to recover.

The ADVOS therapy is CE marked, recognised by international experts, and is already in use in the intensive care units of over 20 hospitals throughout Germany, including a number of leading university hospitals. The company currently employs 55 people. It has received numerous awards, including the 2020 Innovation Award Bavaria, and is listed in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Awards 2019.

The company has announced the completion of a €20 million financing round. The round was led by Crédit Mutuel Equity via its two subsidiaries, Crédit Mutuel Equity Germany and Crédit Mutuel Innovation. In addition, ADVITOS received funding from the European Union’s European Innovation Council (EIC) Fund as part of the EIC Accelerator Pilot blended finance programme. The EIT Digital Accelerator has been supporting ADVITOS during this fundraising with dedicated coaching and targeted introductions to a selected pool of investors interested in their space, size and geography.

Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform how healthcare is delivered. Yet we need to understand the impact of AI on the healthcare landscape to pave the way for the adoption of AI solutions at scale. That’s why EIT Health is exploring two particular topics – the practical application of ethical considerations for innovators using AI and the impact of AI on healthcare organisations and the workforce.

The benefits of AI are many: accelerating the development of life‐saving treatments, supporting improvements in patient care, and allowing healthcare professionals to spend more time with patients. At the same time, AI can increase productivity and efficiency of care delivery. The full potential of AI is still being discussed, but questions have been raised about its potential impact on practitioners and certain specialties, while issues around ethics, use of personal data and AI-related risks are also being considered.

Transforming Healthcare with AI: The Impact on the Workforce and Organisations. This joint publication with McKinsey & Company explores the impact of AI on healthcare practitioners, and the implications of introducing and scaling AI for healthcare organisations and healthcare systems across Europe. The publication offers a unique perspective of public and private sector decision-makers and thought leaders based on bespoke research including interviews and a survey.

AI and Ethics in the Health Innovation Community Building on the guidelines developed by the European Commission’s High-Level Group on AI in 2018, we examine how healthcare professionals are handling data in the AI space.

The third publication on the topic: Contribution to the discussion on the European Commission’s Data Strategy and AI White Paper Following the European Commission’s White Paper on AI and the Communication on a European Strategy for Data of 19 February 2020, a small Consultative Group comprised of senior leaders from the EIT Health network, submitted a detailed set of recommendations to the EC to help inform the ongoing development of EU strategy on data and AI. The EIT Health contribution sets out key areas of input to EU policy makers in response to the particular regulatory and policy needs of AI and data-rich solutions in health and healthy aging. kattintva:

Implementing Value-Based Healthcare in Europe: Handbook for Pioneers

As the European population ages and incidences of chronic disease and co-morbidities increase, it puts greater pressure on healthcare services. We need to create more efficient and sustainable healthcare systems that deliver real value for patients.

Value-based healthcare (VBHC) aims to do just that. Rather than focusing on process, VBHC targets the outcomes that make the biggest difference to patients, while driving cost efficiencies within health services.

VBHC provides a methodology for measurable health and care outcomes that make the biggest difference to patients, while driving cost efficiencies within health services. The EIT Health handbook and framework explores insights from pioneers in the field and defines the key steps critical to implementing VBHC in health services. Directed by Professor Gregory Katz, Chair of Innovation & Value in Health at the University of Paris School of Medicine, it aims to help health care providers fully realise the opportunity presented by VBHC and drive forward a medical culture shift in Europe. ide kattintva érhetőek el, míg az említett kézkönyv az alábbi linkre kattintva angol nyelven elérhető:

i-Days 2021

Creative minds, we need you!

EIT Health and University of Pécs Medical School Institute of Transdisciplinary Discoveries together with Simonyi BEDC Research Center and the Chamber of Commerce of Pécs-Baranya region Pécs-Baranyai Kereskedelmi és Iparkamara are calling all students with an interest in healthcare innovation!

On the 4th of November it will be held again after last year’s success the so-called Innovation Days or i-Days event.
i-Days promote health innovation among university students through dozens of one-day and two-day programmes held in academic institutions around Europe. Students from all academic areas receive an introduction to practical health innovation tools and compete in teams to tackle real-life health challenges. The winning team of each i-Day will attend the Winners’ Event, a final competition that unites students from around Europe.

This year we are looking for solutions in 5 different topics:
1. Babylonian chaos
Continuous telephone ringing, endless administrative tasks, crashing computer systems, unseparated responsibilities, tight deadlines, impatient patient and doctor. What kind of solution could solve this situation?
2. The missing feedback culture from the healthcare sector
How can health workers be motivated to speak and managers to listen to critical, constructive opinions alike? What would be the best solution for this, how could this be implemented most effectively, so that this opportunity is available to all health care workers, and so that what is being said is not just a word shouted in the wilderness?
3. Skynet – the awakening of the smart hospital
The task is to design a process management system that not only helps to monitor the process, from the patient’s entry to the health care institution to the aftercare, but also optimizes the process and eliminates patient congestion due to its predictability. (Traceability, patient education, statistics)
4. Next one please!
The task is to design a unified patient registration and patient calling platform that is easy to apply for all ages. An important element is for the treating physician to “see” exactly where the patient is within the building/process.
5. I’ve written enough
We are looking for an IT – based solution that, in addition to helping to reduce administrative burdens, provides easy – to – use and accessible document management for healthcare professionals (and also for patients?)

i-Days are accessible to all undergraduate and postgraduate students with an interest in healthcare innovation. You do not need any prerequisite skills or prior experience in innovation, entrepreneurship or healthcare. There are no academic requirements and students from all disciplines and departments are welcome to join!

We are waiting for teams of up to 6 people to apply, but if you do not have a team and would like to come, you can still apply, we will solve the rest.

When: 4th of November
Where: University of Pécs, Faculty of Business and Economics 7622 Pécs, Rákóczi út 80 / Students from abroad or being in different locations will have the chance to join online!
